Christmas Anniematters 2016

Christmas Anniematters 2016

-    Every year we run our “Give a Stray a Christmas Dinner” appeal. If you would like to donate any food and toys etc we then divide them between the local charities that work so hard to look after animals in our area. Our own pets usually get spoilt, so why not the lovely strays? Feel free to drop off anything you might want to donate at any of our surgeries.
-    Please remember when it is cold to ‘bump on the bonnet’ to make sure there isn’t a cat against your engine. Every year cats die or get seriously injured when they crawl up inside the warm car from underneath.
-    Did you know that salt and grit can actually cause burns to pets feet when they go out? Always bathe your dog’s feet after a walk and check your cat’s feet daily. Also if it is too cold for you outside, it’s too cold for your pet. Dogs especially love snow and can get very excited but most years we see patients coming in with hypothermia who can easily go into shock.
-    Ensure there is no anti-freeze leaking or spilt anywhere as this can be fatal if ingested.
-    If you have a fire or wood burner, please make sure your pet isn’t able to get close enough to injure themselves.
-    If you have rabbits outside in hutches try putting the hutch into a shed or take indoors. If that is not possible then cover the hutches and give them extra hay and newspaper. Change their bedding frequently as if it is wet it may freeze. Rabbits’ water bottles can freeze over, so why not buy a water bottle insulator or make your own by putting a thick sock over the bottle and securing it with elastic bands.
-    If we do have a harsh winter with lots of ice please make sure wildlife can still have access to water in your garden
-    Please allow plenty of time with ordering prescriptions over the festive period as we’ll have fewer deliveries.
-    Check out our website or facebook for the opening times over the Christmas holidays.
-    On behalf of all the staff at St. Anne’s we’d like to wish you and your pets a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

For a change we have decided to do a Christmas Quiz which you can enter to win some wonderful  goodies kindly provided by some of our veterinary suppliers. Closing date will be midnight on Saturday the 14th January 2017. All correct entries will be put into a ballot and winners will be contacted via email or phone so please make sure you leave your name and contact details on them and pop them into any of our surgeries for the attention of Menna. Good luck!

Toxic Time!

Christmas is a time full of yummy food for us and food that is very dangerous for our pets. We’ve already dealt with mince pie poisonings this year.  A common thing that is around at Christmas time are the little packets of silica gel, these are often found in boxes of new shoes and handbags etc to absorb moisture. These are actually of low toxicity despite saying DO NOT EAT, you might see some gastric upset but apart from that, there isn’t usually a need for treatment. Eating wrapping paper or crepe paper can cause staining of the mouth which may appear alarming but it’s not usually dangerous unless the animal has eaten enough to cause a gastric blockage.

Remember stuffing contains onions; mince pies and fruitcake contain raisins which are all toxic. Onions cause anaemia and raisins including all in the grape family can cause kidney failure. So keep them well out of reach. If you would like to know more about what is poisonous please search for ‘Animal Poison Information’ on Facebook and like Menna’s (A.K.A Poison Girl) page. Or e-mail me at menna@stannesvets.co.uk if you want to know if something you have in your garden or home could be a threat. If you’re worried your pet has ingested something toxic please do not e-mail me but call the surgery on 01323 640011 and we can advise you if anything needs to be done.
