St Annes Vets

Obesity is a disease that can be defined by excess of body fat that is enough to impair health, welfare and quality of life. It estimated that approximately 40% of the UK pet population is obese.

Obesity can lead to many other health issues such as:

  • Diabetes
  • Joint problems
  • Heart disease
  • Respiratory disease

And can ultimately reduce your pet’s life span.

Although some diseases can cause obesity the main reason is simply eating more energy than your pet can use up, whether that is being too many calories, treats, tit bits or simply not getting enough exercise.

Every animal is different and you can have 2 dogs from the same litter that are within their correct weight range but actually have different calorie requirements so are not identical in weight. We use a body condition score chart to determine if your pets is overweight scoring from 1-5, here are a few simple checks you can perform to determine if you’re pet is overweight.

  • You should easily be able to feel (not see) your pets ribs without having to push though a layer of fat
  • By standing over the top of them you should see that they have a visible waist
  • Your pets belly should be tucked up when viewed from the side.
