Obesity is a disease that can be defined by excess of body fat that is enough to impair health, welfare and quality of life. It estimated that approximately 40% of the UK pet population is obese.
Obesity can lead to many other health issues such as:
And can ultimately reduce your pet’s life span.
Although some diseases can cause obesity the main reason is simply eating more energy than your pet can use up, whether that is being too many calories, treats, tit bits or simply not getting enough exercise.
Every animal is different and you can have 2 dogs from the same litter that are within their correct weight range but actually have different calorie requirements so are not identical in weight. We use a body condition score chart to determine if your pets is overweight scoring from 1-5, here are a few simple checks you can perform to determine if you’re pet is overweight.
If you feel that your pet could be overweight and you would like help or advice on your pet’s weight then why not join our St Annes Slimmer’s.
St Annes Slimmer’s is run by our Qualified Vet Nurses who are able to give your pet a health check over and if needed can recommend a weight reduction programme both suitable for you and your pet.
This may involve your pet going onto a prescription diet which is clinically proven to help your pet lose weight, planning a new exercise regime and ultimately keeping your pet 'fit for life'. If you would like to book a consultation with a nurse then please call 01323 640011 to make an appointment.
